This article addresses the most common concerns about Autodesk’s new licensing and subscription options coming in early 2016. We hope you use it to prepare to make an informed decision for your business.
After February 1, 2016, if you need new licenses, you will have to purchase Desktop Subscriptions of these products on a multi-year, annual, or quarterly term basis. For previously purchased licenses, you’ll need to renew active Maintenance Subscription agreements to ensure your software is kept up to date and you retain all the benefits of Maintenance Subscription.
While the Softchoice team recognizes the benefits these changes will bring, we also understand they may seem confusing for some Autodesk clients. We have therefore compiled a list of frequently asked questions, to help you make an informed decision moving forward.
Will an Autodesk Desktop Subscription cost me more?
There’s a common misconception that Desktop Subscription will cost more over the long-term. However, we’ve crunched the numbers and found that even if you aren’t refreshing your Autodesk software every year, a Desktop Subscription may still save you money.
To help illustrate it, take a look at this chart which shows the cost of a Desktop Subscription of AutoCAD LT kept for a full 3 years based on current prices.*
Even if you only refreshed your software once after three years, you’d still save over $1320 (45%) with a multi-year AutoCAD LT Desktop Subscription.
*The chart outlines current pricing models and is based on the historical trend of Autodesk releasing a new version or AutoCAD LT every year. Pricing models for other Autodesk products may yield varying results and may be subject to change.
Will I be “locked in” with an Autodesk Desktop Subscription?
No. The great thing about Desktop Subscription is it actually offers you greater flexibility. Unlike a perpetual license, where you have to pay upfront for the software regardless of your needs, Desktop Subscription lets you license the software on a multi-year, annual, or quarterly basis. This is ideal for project-based businesses; scale up your licenses during busy times, or scale down once contracts have ended.
What if I don’t need all the new features of Autodesk?
With the growing popularity of cloud-based collaboration, using the latest version of Autodesk software has never been more important. With Desktop Subscription, you’ll get access to the latest features as they become available, as well as special cloud services and online technical support. This is essential, not just from a competitive standpoint, but also from a continuity perspective. When everyone is working on the same version of software, your team can collaborate more efficiently.
What if I’m not ready to switch by January 2016?
That’s OK. If you want to stick with your perpetual licenses for the next few years, now is the time to stock up on perpetual licenses with Maintenance Subscription, so you are prepared for your future needs. This will ensure you get free software updates as they’re released, unlimited 24×7 web support, and (if you purchase a 3-year Maintenance Subscription), the ability to fix your costs and protect your investment in perpetual licenses for the next 3 years.
Of course, if you think you’ll be ready to switch to Desktop Subscription sooner, this is also available in annual or multi-year contracts.
What happens if my Maintenance Subscription expires?
As of January 31, 2016, there is no grace period for expired subscription renewals. That means lapsed Maintenance Subscriptions will no longer be renewable, and you’ll have to purchase new Desktop Subscription licenses for the latest version of software. Therefore, if your licenses are coming up for renewal, make sure you renew before they lapse.
