Backing Up to Azure is as Easy as 3-2-1 with Veeam Cloud Connect

Servers, Storage and Networking | Posted on November 13, 2015

See how to enable simple 3-2-1 backup off site to Azure through a secure SSL connection – without any additional Veeam licensing required.

Data volumes are growing at astonishing rates
According to International Data Corp., five zettabytes (ZB) is already in existence, and that will surge to 44 ZB by 2020. Yet with ever-growing quantities of information to protect, IT is faced with ever-shrinking backup windows and escalating bandwidth demands. The bottom line is that traditional approaches to backup and onsite storage are no longer enough.

That’s why so many enterprises are looking to cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure to offload non-critical workloads. The cloud offers these organizations a chance to reduce escalating storage costs while retaining onsite storage for mission-critical and sensitive data.

The 3-2-1 backup rule is easier said than done

But the role of the cloud is widening as businesses seek to safeguard data against any and all eventualities. The 3-2-1 rule is all about making three copies of data. Two remain on site so that in the event of a failure or disaster, a second copy of that data is immediately on hand. But if the primary site is taken out by some kind of an unforeseen event, a full copy of your data has to be available offsite.

Unfortunately, this arrangement is easier said than done for many organizations. Getting backups off site can be challenging due to limited bandwidth, exploding data volumes and a lack of the resources required to build or maintain a robust and secure offsite backup repository.

Veeam Cloud Connect simplifies off-site backup
A new feature of Veeam known as Veeam Cloud Connect opens the door to easy 3-2-1 backup by making it possible to transmit backups offsite to a hosted cloud repository through a secure SSL connection – without any additional Veeam licensing required. This means IT can access and recover this cloud data directly from the backup console, as well as being able to track cloud consumption.

Make the most of your Azure Cloud investment
Existing users of Veeam who already utilize the Microsoft Azure cloud, therefore, can harness the latest in VM backup technology such as built-in WAN acceleration, data compression, forever incremental backups, policy setting for data retention and end-to-end encryption. This makes it simple to master the 3-2-1 rule without dumping money and resources into a second site or adding more expensive bandwidth.

Veeam Cloud Connect is included at no additional charge
If you already have, or plan to purchase Veeam Availability Suite v8, Veeam Backup & Replication v8, and Veeam Backup Essentials v8, then Veeam CC will be included free of charge. All you need is a subscription to a Veeam Cloud & Service Provider partner who will host your cloud backup repository. But those with existing Microsoft Azure accounts may already have spare capacity that can be used without incurring any additional cloud fees.

What you can do right now
Instead of deploying yet another on-premise backup or storage solution, the cloud stands ready to ease the IT burden by offloading non-critical traffic and adding a new layer of protection via the proven 3-2-1 approach.

To help current Microsoft Azure users understand how they can take advantage of this methodology, Softchoice has dedicated Azure and Veeam experts available to recommend the best backup and/or cloud solution to meet their needs.
