Every seven minutes in Canada, one person dies from heart disease and stroke. In fact, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in North America. Chances are, you’ve likely been affected by heart disease or stroke, if not directly, then through someone you know.
What can we do to eliminate these killers? A good start is to increase our daily activity levels – even if it’s just a 15 minute walk every day. And what’s better motivation for exercise than taking your dog for a walk in the park? Not only will your puppy (or friend’s puppy if you don’t have your own) love you for it, your heart will too.
That’s why Softchoice jumped at the chance to join in the Dogs with Heart fundraiser event for the Heart and Stroke Foundation three years ago. We also decided to go one step fruther this year and raised our involvement by co-hosting the event at our Toronto office on May 15th. The event is an annual walkathon where participants walk their dogs around a Toronto village, simultaneously raising money for a great cause and raising awareness about the benefits of exercise.
Watch the video below to see Jenn O’Neil, Softchoice Leadership Coach and Dogs With Heart co-organizer, give the inside scoop on how we’re helping eliminate heart disease and stroke with the help of our furry-friends.
We’re hoping that through events like these, we can help raise awareness about the dangers of cardiovascular disease, promote healthy lifestyles, and raise money for research to find a cure. Of course, this is just one of the many charities that Softchoice employees support through our Softchoice Cares philanthropy program. With two volunteer days given to each employee per year, employees across the continent are getting involved and making a difference with initiatives that they’re passionate about. We know that every effort counts, and that all it takes is one individual to get the ball rolling and help change the world.
