Make a Real Difference as a Co-op Student

Culture | Posted on July 5, 2019 by Alex Macks

The Softchoice co-op program enables students to gain hands-on experience across a variety of fields. I recently had the opportunity to talk to one of the co-op students about her experience at Softchoice.

Kiana Desroches is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the University of Guelph and is majoring in Marketing Management. She has previously worked at Softchoice on her past two co-op terms in the Licensing Operations department. Kiana has returned to Softchoice for her third co-op term and is currently working in the Marketing department.

What is your role as a co-op, and tell us what you do at Softchoice?

I am the Innovation Executive Forum, Marketing Coordinator Co-op. The Innovation Executive Forum (IEF) is an exclusive program that enables IT leader collaboration through private networking events. My role involves managing the monthly IEF blog posts and newsletters, as well as long term projects. One of the main projects that I am currently working on involves sourcing and posting content for our private IEF LinkedIn community, in order to drive member discussion and engagement.

As my role in the Marketing department entails coordination and project management, it is critical that I pay close attention to details and manage my time efficiently. I love that I get the opportunity to work with various marketing teams such as the Corporate Events and Digital Marketing teams.

What excites you about coming to work every day?

“What excites me about coming to work every day is the people.”

I immediately noticed how friendly and welcoming everyone is at Softchoice. The Softchoice culture and environment really makes me feel as if I am part of a team. Softchoice is all about bringing your whole self to work. By that, I mean that Softchoice encourages all of its employees to truly be themselves and embrace their uniqueness.

Softchoice is a diverse organization and is very inclusive. This is important to me and makes coming to work enjoyable and worthwhile. I am a strong believer that your work should be something that you enjoy doing every day.

At Softchoice, we strive to live by our values every day. In your role, how do you see these values come to life?

My values align well with those of Softchoice. Softchoice highly values its people. The friendly work culture enables a respectful and collaborative environment. Working at Softchoice, I have seen that their values are not just something that they have written down but rather they are ingrained in the day-to-day activities and initiatives demonstrated by employees.

Collaborating with teams cross-functionally, it is clear that everyone wants to see you succeed. This encourages an inclusive and supportive environment. Softchoice is committed to fostering a positive work-life balance, which I see through the many benefits they offer to their employees, such as work-from-home days and flexible hours.

If you had one piece of advice for a new co-op, what would it be and why?

One piece of advice that I would offer to a new co-op is: don’t be afraid to take risks and challenge yourself.

Being in a co-op program is all about trying new things and gaining hands-on experience across a wide variety of fields. So, if you are nervous and hesitant to ask questions or take on challenging tasks – don’t be!

You should use your co-op work terms to explore different roles and take advantage of any opportunities. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and definitely don’t be afraid of failure. Take each failure as a lesson and a way to learn from your mistakes – this is how you will grow professionally.

Softchoice enables co-op students to reach their full potential by allowing them to develop their skills and making them feel a part of the team.
