Softchoice Cares and Year Up: Unleashing the potential of young adults

Culture | Posted on March 1, 2016 by Adam Limoges

Two years ago, Softchoice’s Seattle office started to work with a non-profit organization, Year Up.The Seattle office set out to align with Year Up as it directly relates to closing the opportunity gap, helping people realize their potential, and bridging the digital divide. Since its founding in 2000, Year Up has served over 13,000 young adults.

Since 2014, our Seattle office has organized two “Orange Day” events (lead by Chris Cottler) where over 80 students spend a full day hearing from Softchoice Solutions Architects and local IT Leaders about real technology implementations and complex solutions.

The most exciting part of these events can arguably be the closing panel where the presenters, many with 30+ years of experience working in or around IT, are asked candid questions by the students directly.

In 2015, the employees of Softchoice’s Seattle office and the Softchoice Cares team raised over $30,000 to donate to Year Up.

Poker nights, trivia nights, and golf and ping-pong tournaments were just a few of the events they organized to raise awareness and make an impact.

“Year Up does not accept the opportunity gap that exists in our nation. We are determined to provide our urban young adults with the education, guidance and support they need to realize their potential.” – Gerald Chertavian

The partnership with Year Up has allowed the Softchoice Seattle office to also start a mentorship program, which connects employees directly to students.
