For more than 10 years, Softchoice Cares has worked to bridge the digital divide in communities across North America and places around the world.
We believe that access to technology opens up a world of possibilities for disadvantaged families – particularly children – to develop the skills they need to break the cycle of poverty.
This year, the employee-led Softchoice Cares board will build on that mission, traveling to Cebu City, Philippines to build a computer lab for local students at Camp 7 National High School. Over the course of the two-week project, Softchoice and Lenovo employee volunteers will transform the existing canteen building into a 21st-century computer lab. Volunteers will also undertake work to repair and restore the building.
This work would not be possible without our partnership with Rise Above Foundation. This incredible organization works with volunteers to improve the quality of life for the underprivileged by means of providing educational opportunities, livelihood training, and health and hygiene programs. Their vision is to give people a chance to lead better lives through education and training.
The Softchoice Cares Cebu City project is funded through Softchoice employee donations, our generous program partners, Lenovo and Sophos, and Softchoice itself.
So what do you need to build a computer lab 8,000 miles away?
Thanks to our program partners, we have everything we need to build a high-tech computer lab that will serve 560 students from the Manganilla community:
• Lenovo: 25 Lenovo laptops, $3,000 in classroom supplies and 400 USB storage devices
• Sophos: critical networking infrastructure and security software to protect the computer lab
About our Softchoice Cares international projects:
Softchoice Cares overseas projects offer powerful, life-changing experiences for our people. Over the last 10 years, Softchoice employees have travelled to Sri Lanka, Bali, Kenya, Rwanda, and India to help some of the world’s most impoverished communities lay the foundations for a better future. The money raised through annual fundraising is used to support these projects directly while the missions themselves, including travel and room and board expenses are funded entirely by Softchoice, partner sponsorships, and participating board members.
