Introducing a Softchoice Journey: From BlackBerry to BYOD and Beyond

From the experts | Posted on June 13, 2012 by Madeleine Lee

Taking a closer look at a real BYOD experience – the one at Softchoice! This is Part one of a four-part series.

Can you believe all of this now fits in one device?

It’s the revolution that’s affecting companies everywhere with no sign of slowing. In fact, it’s projected to be the new norm. Bring your own device, or BYOD, the result of tremendous pressure from the client computing revolution. But the concerns are significant. What with security threats, IT headaches, legal issues and the constant fear of lack of control; BYOD isn’t always a welcome word in the CIO’s objective planner.

But it’s that tricky leading argument that we just can’t seem to get away from: It’s happening anyway.

Once upon a time …

A year and a half ago, Softchoice initiated our own BYOD policy on company smartphones. Instead of being provided a company-issued BlackBerry, employees are now given a very specific monthly ‘allowance’ to apply towards their cell phone bill, and are then able to choose their own device and provider.

Softchoice Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer Kevin Wright put it this way: “I was somewhat pushed into it… but it was apparent that it was happening anyway. The question became less of ‘should we’ to ‘when do we do this’.”

Most North American companies are either in the same boat or looking to hop aboard. The pressure on IT to go BYO is intense. Executives are demanding the latest gadgets and users are calling for the freedom of choice. The cost of using a BlackBerry enterprise is growing, but budgets aren’t.

Fear of the unknown?

So with all these pressures and concerns, what’s a company to do? I can’t tell you what to do, but I can tell you what we did. Through this 4-part blog series, I’ll be covering our journey from idea development to present-day results.  You’ll have an insider’s look at the process we went through! Excited yet?

Four reasons you should follow this blog series:

  • Unbiased analysis of the BYOD pros and cons
  • You’ll get expert tips and suggestions for your own BYOD program
  • Examples of our mobile device policies and communications
  • Real opinions from real Softchoice employees

Don’t think it’s happening to you? By 2016, it’s predicted that 350 million employees will use smartphones—about 200 million of them will BYO. Follow me as I share the good, the bad, and the wildly important by subscribing via email on the upper-right hand side of this page.
